Today's challenges aren't easy. Obama is trying to sort out a host of very tough issues, including budget priorities, the debt ceiling, entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, and the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. But Obama hasn't emerged as the kind of daring and charismatic leader that many voters expected when they elected him in 2008. Rushing to the front lines of the battle is not Obama's style. Obama had an audience with the previous pope, Benedict XVI, in July 2009. At the time, the Vatican underscored the deep disagreement between them on abortion. Benedict gave the president a copy of a Vatican document on bioethics that asserted the church's opposition to using embryos for stem cell research, cloning and in vitro fertilization. Obama supports stem cell research.
Look at the case of former CAW president Buzz Hargrove a few years ago. During the 2006 federal election campaign, Hargrove publicly supported Liberal leader Paul Martin and urged NDP members and supporters to vote strategically for Liberal candidates in selected ridings. The Executive of the Ontario NDP found Hargrove to be in breach of the Party's Constitution and voted to expel him. Its decision was later upheld by the Provincial Council of the Party.
