Mitt Romney started the push to the picayune. weakness. foreign policy based on a one paragraph statement is what you want to do as a politician. But it is the opposite of what the statesman wishes to project. Doing so, especially during a crisis, is a warning to voters, a suggestion that this person is not serious. In matters of foreign policy, a person playing the small game often doesn't appear to have the prudence, wisdom and judgment that the job requires.

T hirdly, Russia is not strong. It is an unreformed, corruption bound, commodities based (more particularly, oil and gas based), infrastructure defic ient, innovation challenge d economy with no manufactured products apart from military that are competitive on the world market. It has commercial, taxation, enforcement and legal regimes that are entirely inadequate for the needs of a modern competitive economy, and continues to be in comprehensive denial of its Soviet era criminality and is thus is at odds with most of its neighbours whose co operation and good will would otherwise be valuable. And it has a government whose legitimacy is based on stuffed ballot boxes and on the moral orientations of its KGB/FSB ruling clique and their proteges. Each one of these observations is factually verifiable.
When I was part of the Evangelical church, there was a group called Promise Keepers. I was nominally involved while I was married (to my wife) in Pennsylvania. Their purpose was to try to encourage people to maintain their promises: particularly in marriage, being faithful to their wives. Great name: and it seemed very appropriate to their purpose. But as an Evangelical group, they were very specific about the promises they maintained. They believed that the man is the head of the household, that same sex marriage is wrong, and that abortion is never the way of God. They claimed to be non partisan, though this worked only within a single context.
